New Lines, New Price Lead to 500% Jump in Sales of Pharox LED Bulbs

Pharox BLU Below $5 Price Point, Encourages New Users to Try Replacement LEDs

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Lemnis, Inc, the San Francisco-based leader in sustainable LED lighting technology, released three new lines of its popular Pharox-brand LED replacement bulbs last week and saw a 500% increase in sales over average weekly sales based on the new every-day low pricing. The lowest-priced bulb, the 200-lumen Pharox BLU, broke the $5 price point with a suggested retail price of $4.95(1) sold exclusively through pharox-led.com. The response from consumers meant the busiest week on pharox-led.com ever with web traffic up hundreds of times the average, vastly increasing sales on the Pharox XL products as well as the BLU.

"We knew there were customers out there who wanted to but hadn't yet tried LEDs," said Co-Founder Warner Philips.  "We just hadn't expected such an incredible uptake. In study after study, price is repeatedly given as the number one barrier to consumer adoption. With the new Pharox BLU and XL lines we give the average consumer a chance to experience a well-made bulb that gives off the warm, white light they want without added frills or high costs and perfect for certain home lighting applications."

Unsurprisingly, the low introductory Pharox BLU price has meant an increased interest in other Pharox models. The Pharox 300 XL has been a sales success with both consumers and hospitality businesses that want a 3-year warranty and a dimmable warm white lighting experience.

"We have found a particular strong interest in the Pharox 300 XL from customers who are looking for replacement bulbs for living rooms, dining areas, kitchens and home office/working space where Americans want dimmable products that are 'on' significantly longer than most rooms," said Philips.

The XL line is aimed at home and commercial customers who want to be sure of a longer-lasting LED and the 3-year/35,000 hour warranty to back it up. The Pharox XL 200 is priced at $8.95 and the XL 300 is $11.95. Finally, the Energy Star-qualified Pharox PRO bulbs (coming soon) are designed with the commercial and rebate-driven customer in mind and will carry a 5-year replacement guarantee.

The Pharox BLU 200-lumen model is a "no frills," non-dimmable consumer LED. It comes with a one-year warranty. The next step up in lumens is the 350-lumen Pharox BLU bulb with a suggested retail price of $6.95, also with a one-year warranty. The Pharox BLU line is only available at pharox-led.com. These low-lumen bulbs can be useful in many areas of the average home: in a bedside lamp, in reflective cans over kitchen counters or in recessed cans in a hallway.

The Pharox BLU was designed to entice consumers who wanted to try LEDs but were deterred by high prices. All three lines - Pharox BLU, Pharox XL and Pharox PRO (due out later this year) - offer customers what they need from an LED bulb without piling on added cost for features that aren't necessary for their situation. Recent Energy Star and DOE speakers hi-lighted the need for lower pricing to get consumers to start using LEDs, as well as the under-served market for lower lumen output LEDs for specific home applications.

The three lines of Pharox LED replacement bulbs offer consumers of all stripes the same reliability they expect from incandescent bulbs with vastly increased life expectancy and vastly decreased energy usage. A typical 40-watt incandescent bulb costs approximately $5.69 per year to use at $0.13 per kWh, three hours a day. The equivalent Pharox 350 lumen bulb (BLU, XL and PRO) costs just $0.85 per year in energy use. ecoNoon has LED solution to compact fluorescent light bulb controversy

Compact fluorescent light bulb's have mercury in them.  This has some people alarmed because mercury contamination is a global problem.  However CFL's save enough electricity to cause enough less coal to be burnt to reduce mercury emissions from coal fired electricity more than the mercury in the bulb.  This is true but a difficult enough equation to get your head around that perhaps it's better, in some peoples minds, to not have mercury in the bulbs in the first place.

As a 20+ year user of CFL's I'm irritated that some are fighting against adopting CFL's because of this.  But as someone excited over LED light bulbs I'm glad to see advances being made there.

Plasma light bulbs the new big thing?

There are light bulbs everywhere in our modern society, and one dramatic difference between our time and that of our ancestors is ubiquitous lights at night. I can't imagine that before electricity the average person could afford well-lit homes at night. The light comes at a cost, the electricity to keep our homes lit usually comes from burning fossil fuels. Light bulbs produce lumens and it more or less doesn't matter what the technology is inside the light bulb. But in the macro-economic picture it makes a big difference the efficiency. Power efficient bulbs promise to generate the same quantity of lumens while expending less electricity. So far the compact fluorescent has been the primary highly efficient light bulb, I've been using CFL's for nearly 20 years. However there are some up-and-coming technologies which may do better.

LED's with high efficiency have been developed but at eye-popping prices. They've seen the greatest adoption in street lights, and vehicle running lights. I've been using LED lighting on my electric vehicles. But while there has long been LED lights available for home use, they haven't been widely adopted.

Luxim Corporation has developed a new light that is more efficient than LED lights.

The technology uses a radio-frequency (RF) signal generated by a power amplifier (PA) circuit that generates an electric field around the bulb. The high concentration of energy vaporizes the contents of the bulb into a plasma state in the bulbs center, the controlled plasma generates an intense light source.

They have several versions for different purposes:-

Entertainment Lighting: For entertainment lighting, LIFI products offer an intense output, a full color spectrum, long life, and ruggedness that outperform its competition. LIFI sources last more than 10 times longer and have an order of magnitude better reliability than conventional HID lamps while offering the intense beam and the colorful spectrum needed for stage, studio and theatrical lights.

Architectural Lighting: With products whose output ranges from 12,000 to 22,000 lumens from a source that is just a few millimeters wide, LIFI enables bright yet compact flood, spot, accent and illuminating light fixtures. LIFI also has higher efficiency and reliability compared to traditional HID fixtures. In addition, LIFI has built in control functions that can be made compatible to any intelligent lighting networks.

Street and Area Lighting: Imagine a directional light source with greater than 120 lumens/watt, can output more than 20,000 lumens from s single source that is a fraction of the size of an HID and LED source, dims to 20% instantaneously on command, has a CRI of 95, and can start and re-strike instantaneously.

Instrument Lighting: Instrument lighting includes LIFI applications like medical and analytical lighting. Endoscopy, microscopy and other equipment are made possible with the highest level of color rendering available from a long life light source. In addition, with no significant variation in the intensity or spectrum, the quality of imaging applications is enhanced. Finally, the long life of the light source results in increased uptime and lower cost of ownership.

Cree Announces High-Volume Availability of Brightest Lighting-Class LEDs

Cree Semiconductor is a market leader in high efficiency LED lighting. While the compact fluorescent lights are more efficient than incandescent the LED lighting is even more efficient. The important measure is the lumens of light output per watt of electricity.

Cree now offers XLamp XP-E cool white (5,000K - 10,000K CCT) LEDs in a minimum R2 flux bin (114-122 lumens at 350 mA), which is the highest commercially available minimum-flux order code for a single-die LED, at 350 mA, in the industry today.

Powerful Little Light: LED With 1,000 Lumens

Lights is perhaps something we take for granted but have you tried living without electric lights? I haven't, though I have spent some time in places where there are no electric lights. The people who live there have all sorts of ways to create light when there's no electric lights.. like, candles. Anyway the ability to have light when it's dark is one of the miracles of the modern age. But it's also a curse of sorts because electric lighting has become so ubiquitous that it's using a tremendous amount of power. The most common light bulb, the incandescent bulb, wastes 95% of the energy sent into the bulb, yet the companies that make them have done a great job keeping costs down, and the inexpensive price is a barrier to entry for any other product.

There are two sorts of electric lights which are more efficient than incandescent bulbs. The compact fluorescent is about 3x as efficient, and those bulbs last 10x longer (or thereabouts) so the higher price for the compact fluorescent pays for itself over the life of the bulb but I suspect the much higher price puts off most people and hence they are not so popular. However LED lighting is even more efficient, using about 1 percent the power required for an incandescent bulb, while lasting hundreds of times longer. Unfortunately LED bulbs which could adequately light a room were astronomically expensive and almost nobody knows these exist much less own any.

Osram has developed a small light-emitting diode spotlight that achieves an output of more than 1,000 lumens for the first time. That's the same brightness as a 75 watt bulb.
